MARCH 19-28

All Saints Sabbath Suppers to be held in March
You are cordially invited to participate in a wonderful experience this Lenten season which helps people in our large parish to connect with one another in conversations around a meal.

A few years ago at a Parish Retreat on the topic of Sabbath, guest speaker Rabbi Sharon Brous inspired us with her description of the Sabbath in the Jewish tradition especially the meal. With the lighting of the candles on Friday night, one crosses the threshold into some liminal space, a time outside regular time, into God's time. The evening begins with the blessing of the light, the bread and the wine. The conversation revolves around where people are on their journeys, what they have found meaningful in their past experiences, and any other naturally arising topics which help people connect with one another. Although the Jewish Sabbath is on Friday evenings, our Sabbath Suppers will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings (or lunch) on the last two weekends before Easter.

Sabbath Suppers provide an excellent opportunity to take time out from the fast pace of our lives. The Jewish Sabbath begins at sundown, no matter what. It cannot be delayed until one is ready for it. It just comes. And one stops. In our culture the idea of stopping before one's work is done is daunting. We worry about stopping before we've completed our work and the items on our 'to-do' list. However, as we realize when we do take time-outs, we're still able to accomplish what we set out to do. The Sabbath Supper offers a special opportunity for that reenergizing time-out.

Sharing food is at the heart of our Judeo-Christian faith. The holy meal of Eucharist is the centerpiece of our faith community. The idea that God sets a banquet before us with room for every single person on the face of the earth is central to our life. A meal is a lovely way in which to reflect on life and its meanings. We are fed by the actual food and by our understandings of one another. Sabbath Suppers offer wonderful opportunities to receive this sustenance.

In March 2009 many All Saints parishioners enjoyed participating in Sabbath Suppers. The Suppers were happy experiences of sharing spirituality, warm fellowship and good food in the informal atmosphere of people's homes. Because of the success of last spring's Suppers, the Growth and Incorporation Committee is planning Sabbath Suppers to be held on the weekends of March 19, 20 and 21 and March 26, 27 and 28.

Take time out to participate in the Sabbath Supper experience. Sign up for one of the Sabbath Suppers at the Sabbath Supper Table on the lawn on February 21, 28 and March 7.

Save the Date! “Grace Trumps” with Serene Jones

Serene JonesWe live in a world profoundly broken by violence and disfigured by harms we inflict upon each other. Is there any hope for those whose lives have been wounded by violence?

Serene Jones is the first woman President of Union Theological Seminary in the Seminary’s 172-year history, and the Roosevelt Professor of Systematic Theology. According to Ms. Jones, God loves this world and desires that suffering be met by words of hope, that love and grace overwhelm, and that something new happens. That is the central question and mission of Serene Jones's Trauma and Grace: Theology in a Ruptured World. Central to its overall theme is an investigation of the myriad ways both individual and collective violence affect one's capacity to remember, to act, and to love, and how those various circumstances potentially challenge theological understanding of how grace is experienced, and even how the traumatic experience of Jesus' death is remembered. Of particular interest is the author's focus on the long term effects of collective violence on abuse survivors, war veterans, and marginalized populations, and the discrete ways in which grace and redemption might be exhibited in each context. Stay tuned for more information to come soon! For more information contact Norma Sigmund at 626.583.2734.

Transformational Journey To Kenya
Kenya is a beautiful country in East Africa. It is also one of those that has been severely affected by climate change. Nomadic communities, the Maasai among them, have been adversely affected. Poverty has increased tremendously especially among families.

All Saints is organizing a Transformational Journey to Kenya from July 18-31 to see firsthand the effects of climate change and how the nomadic communities are coping; their struggles and their hope. A two-day safari will be offered as an option at the end of the trip.

SUMMER 2010

Save The Date: Summer Adventure 2010
Wha-wha-what?! Summer Adventure is at night?! Did you know that as many as 50% of California's public school students take summer school? This prevents many students from experiencing the joys and importance of Summer Vacation Bible Day School. This year, in an effort to reach out to more families, we are going to turn Summer Adventure upside down and have it in the evening! June 28-July 2 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Children will gather for dinner each evening, fun activities and evening worship all before bedtime! We look forward to this exciting adventure and can't wait to see you there! For more information contact: Jobi Harrell at jharrell@allsaints-pas.org or 626.583.2763.
