What is a Deacon in the Episcopal Church? Who is a Deacon, and what do they do? And, what is an Archdeacon? Join the Women’s Community for a simple lunch of rice and beans as the Venerable Dr. Joanne Leslie — Archdeacon of the Diocese of Los Angeles — clears up the mystery and answers all of your questions.

joanne_leslie_mdIn 2011, Joanne was appointed the first female Archdeacon in the Episcopal diocese of Los Angeles following a lengthy career in international public health. As a deacon in Los Angeles, she worked with urban churches to establish innovative nutrition and fitness programs and taught at UCLA’s School of Public Health. “My work in public health was a ministry long before I recognized it as such,” she says. Joanne will share her experience with maternal and child malnutrition issues in sub-Saharan Africa and efforts to reduce health inequalities in underserved communities of Los Angeles. In addition, she will share her vision of the critical role that deacons play in the contemporary Episcopal Church.
