Gary Hall on Thomas Merton
We are delighted to welcome back to All Saints Church our friend and former staff member — and now Dean of the National Cathedral in Washington DC — Gary Hall. Gary will be with us on Sunday, July 19 to preach at 7:30, 9:00 and 11:15 and to offer a special Summer Forum marking the 100th birthday of priest, monk, and poet Thomas Merton.
In his brief life (he died accidentally at age 53) Merton wrote more than 60 books while living the life of a monastic at the Gethesemani Trappist community in Kentucky. Forty-seven years after his death, Merton exerts increasing influence on Christians and others in his roles as contemplative, concerned citizen, and literary artist.
As people of faith seek to engage the nexus between prayer and action, we could seek no better or more compassionate guide than Thomas Merton. In his presentation, Gary Hall will discuss a brief selection of Merton’s works, covering his thoughts on contemplation, social action, and human psychology.
