All Saints Church has an unprecedented opportunity to engage one of the premier practitioners of science and mindfulness as we welcome Dan Siegel — clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, Founding Co-Director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center and Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute.
Dr. Siegel will lead us in a contemplative retreat through meditation and mindfulness experiences and offer us the opportunity to explore ancient spiritual practices through the lens of science.
Recent scientific studies support what ancient spiritual traditions have taught regarding the health benefits of living a life of meaning and connection. In many ways, wisdom practice and the term “spiritual” each refer to the quest for finding authenticity, meaning, and true connection so profoundly needed in a modern world that now confronts us with endless distractions.
In a “wheel of awareness” practice we will experience directly ways to focus attention and integrate consciousness. We will explore the integration of science and spirituality so that the ways in which our inner subjective experience, our interpersonal relationships, and our objective empirical knowledge can be woven together to illuminate the importance of meaning, connection, and equanimity in our lives.
We will address such questions as: why does feeling a part of “a larger whole” matter so much, and why does not simply living as an isolated self improve our immune system functioning? What are the scientific insights that reveal why a spiritual life, a life with meaning and connection, is “good for you”? And what does the science of spirituality reveal about ways we can cultivate such well-being in our own lives?
Participants will learn how to use their mind in integrative ways in order to transform their lives as well as explore scientific notions of what spirituality might be from an empirical point of view.
