Muslims across the United States are experiencing an unprecedented increase in hate crimes and bias incidents. Since the tragic events of September 11 anti-Muslim sentiment has sadly become prevalent in America. Lamentably, what we are experiencing now is something different. Some call it, “The New Islamophobia” — no longer on the fringes but increasingly mainstream. Politicians and popular pundits use such inflammatory rhetoric about Islam that many of our American Muslims brothers and sisters have gone from feeling uneasy to being concerned about their safety.
Our commitment here at All Saints Church to stand against oppression and the exclusion of any member of the human family calls us today to stand with our Muslim family members. To do that effectively we need to “go to school” on this rise of this “new Islamophobia.” Enter our long time friend Reza Aslan.
Dr. Reza Aslan is an internationally acclaimed writer and scholar of religions and author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. From his groundbreaking “Open Letter to American Muslims on Same-Sex Marriage” to his New York Times op-ed on the Iranian Nuclear Arms Agreement, Reza Aslan is inarguably one of the seminal opinion leaders of our generation. We are delighted to welcome him back to the Rector’s Forum on Sunday, January 10th for this timely and important Rector’s Forum.
