On Sunday, December 17 we will mark the Third Sunday of Advent by lighting the “Joy” candle on the wreath in church and by welcoming Alec Mapa for a joy-filled Rector’s Forum. Comedian, actor and activist Alec is an active member of All Saints — and one of the funniest people on the planet.
An inimitable comedian (and comedic actor) Alec grew up in San Francisco during the 1970s, raised in a conservative, Catholic Filipino family but surrounded by bohemian lifestyles and multiculturalism that influenced and shaped him. He formally broke into show business in 1987 with a role in an ABC After School Special — and scored acclaim in 1991 with a lead role as the opera star Song Liling, in the Broadway production of David Henry Hwang’s play M. Butterfly. From Desperate Housewives to Ugly Betty to his own one-man show Baby Daddy, he has worked to break new ground and open new doors in depictions of gay culture and lifestyles, and won broad acclaim and support in the LGBT community for doing so.
A long time supporter of causes benefiting AIDS and the Gay, Lesbian and Asian-American communities, including Project Angel Food and AIDS Project Los Angeles in April 2005, he was awarded a Visionary Award from East West Players, the nation’s premier Asian American theatre organization.
Married to Jamison (Jamie) Hebert, Alec and Jamie found All Saints Church in 2008 when Jamie volunteered for a day as part of protest against the Prop 8 vote. We are thrilled they are part of our All Saints family.
Come for a morning of love, laughter and joy: the funniest thing to happen in the Forum this — or any other — year. 10:15 a.m. in the Rector’s Forum
