Every week at All Saints Church we put our faith into action. This week we are writing our members of the California State Legislature urging them to support affordable housing in the California Budget.
California will enjoy a $31 billion budget surplus during the 2022-2023 fiscal year. A substantial portion of this should fund affordable housing, homelessness services and renter assistance.
Families are in dire need of affordable housing and rental assistance. While much public attention has recently been focused on proposals to provide relief from inflation, we must remember that the cost of housing in our state has been rising faster than inflation for years. For example, American Community Survey data show median rent in CA increased by 27.3% between 2014 and 2019 (the most recent single-year data available) while the Consumer Price Index increased by only 7.6% during the same period. Housing inflation in our state was thus over three times worse than general inflation, and it should be a top priority to address this in the new budget.
We join Abundant Housing LA in support of more funding for housing by sending a letter to your legislators. Our ask include $10 billion toward affordable housing grant programs, $5 billion for homelessness rental assistance, and funding to pay 100% of retroactive and several months of prospective rent and utilities for Californians unable to shoulder these costs due to the pandemic.
