With the beginning of a new Congress and the backdrop of mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, our action this week is a letter to our members of Congress expressing strong support for gun safety legislation.

On January 24th, Senator Feinstein sent out an open letter that read in part:

I have no higher priority than trying to address our nation’s epidemic of gun violence. My heart sank Sunday morning when I woke to the news of a mass shooting in Monterey Park during a Lunar New Year’s celebration.

The same feeling returned last night after learning of shootings in Half Moon Bay and overnight in Oakland.

My heart goes out to the friends and families of the 19 victims lost to these shootings.

We are ONLY 24 days into 2023 and the United States has seen:

39 mass shootings

70 dead

167 wounded

5 mass shootings in California

26 dead in California

She went on to tell about gun safety legislation that she has introduced in the Senate.

Our action letter supports the objectives of that legislation and a bit more. Our letter states support for a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, a comprehensive system of background checks for the purchasing of guns and ammunition, the elimination of online gun sales and the establishment of a minimum age of 21 for the purchase of guns and ammunition.

The letter also makes clear that we need federal legislation on this. The Monterey Park shooting manifestly demonstrated that. Those murders were committed with a gun purchased in Arizona that would have been illegal in California.

Please sign a letter to your members of Congress supporting gun safety.

Options to Take Action:
