Every week at All Saints Church we put our faith into action. This week we are joining with the United Farm Workers and urging the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to implement emergency heat regulations for farm workers.

Summer heat has begun, but the majority of farm workers are still unprotected.

Farm workers are as much as 35 times more likely to die from heat than any other civilian occupation. Only a handful of states — California, Oregon and Washington — have policies on farm work in extreme heat. This lack of regulations puts farm workers in an impossible situation where they are forced to choose between making a living and taking care of their health.

Climate change is worsening this hazard. In recent years, record-high temperatures have been seen across the country. These extreme temperatures could make thousands of farm workers seriously ill — and even suffer heat stroke and die.

We are fighting on behalf of people like Maria Isavel Vasquez Jimenez, Ascension Valdivia, Constantino Hernandez, Audon Felix, Miguel Angel Guzman, Florencio Gueta Vargas, Sebastian Francisco Perez and many workers before them who died due to heat exposure. Their deaths are hard to accept because they didn’t need to happen.

Heat deaths are preventable tragedies. The prevention is nothing complicated: shade, cool water, rest, education and monitoring.

Sign the petition: Demand OSHA immediately enact emergency heat regulations and then adopt permanent heat regulations to protect the people who feed America.
