Every week at All Saints Church we put our faith into action. This Sunday we are signing a letter opposing the efforts by five far-right senators to add anti-LGBTQ content warnings to children’s television shows.
This latest example of far-right discrimination is truly ridiculous, yet just as dangerous as ever. Five right-wing senators are now asking the official TV ratings board to join in their bigotry by adding hateful content warnings to children’s shows with LGBTQ characters. Apparently kids can handle learning about a virgin birth, but not seeing two moms on TV — even if they regularly see two dads pick up their friends at school.
In a letter to the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board, the five MAGA senators especially target transgender Americans, falsely calling transgender identities a “mental disorder” and claiming that gender-affirming treatment is “harmful” — even though the American Psychiatric Association disagrees.
We need to make sure that these lawmakers aren’t the only voices the TV censors hear from, especially since most anti-LGBTQ discrimination is done in the name of religion. We need to show them that most Christians support LGBTQ inclusion, and that it’s these senators who are the dangerous fringe.
The five MAGA senators want us to believe that their hatred is somehow in the name of “parental rights.” But as Michigan state senator Mallory McMorrow said in a viral, faith-based speech last month after being falsely called a “groomer,”
“I am the biggest threat to your hollow, hateful scheme. Because you can’t claim that you are targeting marginalized kids in the name of ‘parental rights’ if another parent is standing up to say no… I want every child in this state to feel seen, heard, and supported, not marginalized and targeted…
“Hate will only happen if people like me stand by and let it happen.”
As Christians, we know that everyone is made in the image of God, and that Jesus calls us to love and include everyone. The recent increase of LGBTQ characters on television accurately depicts the diversity of those around us — a diversity our enormous God created to reveal the fullness of the divine image.
The growing trend of LGBTQ acceptance should be celebrated and encouraged, not made into a political football by Christian nationalists seeking more and more power. The TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board needs to know that these politicians do not speak for us as Christians and that consumers want kids’ programming to teach our children love, not hate.
