Every week at All Saints Church we put our faith into action. This week we are addressing the danger of the President having the sole authority to launch a nuclear weapon, at any time, for any reason, without consulting anyone else. This is extremely dangerous, allowing a reckless or impulsive president to order a nuclear strike. These missiles reach their targets in less than 30 minutes and cannot be recalled. Under our current system, one unstable president can start a nuclear war that leads to global catastrophe.

Placing total control of US nuclear weapons in just one person’s hands —the president’s — is a dangerous gamble.

We must change the system that invests a single person with that degree of power. Fortunately, we have a solution. The Federal Emergency Management Agency continuously tracks the locations of officials in the presidential line of succession and can communicate with them at a moment’s notice. This same tracking and communication system could allow the decision to launch nuclear weapons to require consent from two additional high-level officials, putting a check into one of the most critical decisions that can ever be made.

We must take advantage of this moment of increased attention on presidential nuclear powers to amplify the facts and advocate for safer solutions. Please take action and urge President Biden to end the authority of just one person to launch our nuclear weapons.
