Every week at All Saints Church we put our faith into action. This week the focus of our action is the Farm Bill currently before Congress with an emphasis on the domestic and global food assistance programs it contains. Urge your members of Congress to support legislation that builds healthy, equitable, and sustainable food systems.

For most of human history, hunger was by far the most pressing nutrition challenge. As recently as the 1960s, one in three people worldwide was chronically undernourished—hungry because they did not get enough calories. Today, the global hunger rate is about one in 10 people, thanks in part to the United States’ food assistance programs. The United States’ flagship domestic nutrition program and the main vehicle for reducing hunger within the U.S. is SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which currently serves more than 41 million people.

The farm bill is our nation’s most important national food system legislation. It is critical to the work of ending hunger at home and abroad. Indeed, the farm bill impacts each one of us. As Congress works to renew our food and farm programs, our action letter urges our members of Congress to support legislation that builds healthy, equitable, and sustainable food systems.

Specifically, we ask them to:

  • Protect SNAP from further restrictions.
  • Increase funding for fresh produce within SNAP benefits through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP).
  • Reduce food waste by cosponsoring the Food Date Labeling Act, H.R.3159/S.1484.
  • Reauthorize the Food for Peace global nutrition program at no less than its current level of $2.5 billion annually and allow additional flexibility to provide the most effective form of assistance in each local context.

As a people of faith, we are moved to help and advocate for people experiencing hunger and poverty – no matter where they live. Therefore, we stand with Bread for the World and urge our members of Congress to support a farm bill that builds healthy, equitable, and sustainable food systems. Sign a letter to your members of Congress.
