This is the One Book, One County selection for Los Angeles County in 2024. It tells the turbulent story of a wealthy Los Angeles family, the Alvarados. As the Los Angeles Review of Books noted, “Los Angeles’s wildfires, strange orange skies, and ashen air are a constant backdrop.” The New York Times reviewer said, “It’s a capacious book, chock-full of human drama set against the backdrop of a record-breaking California drought, and Escandón writes with a great deal of energy and love for her characters.”
