Friday June 28 — Fiction Fun! Reads The Master and Margarita
7:00 pm in the Guild Room.
Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita. (Recommended translation: Burgin and O’Connor, though others are possible.) This is an enduringly popular novel, much appreciated on Goodreads. Martin Seymour-Smith, in a survey of literature, said, “Bulgakov is one of the most interesting of writers to survive (one wonders how he did it) the horrors of the earlier Stalin years. His fictional procedures are among the most interesting of his time.” And his “masterpiece” is The Master and Margarita, “a multi-layered piece of ‘realist magic’ about two critics, Berlioz and Bezdomnyi, and the devil, Pilate, Christ and the crucifixion—all in Moscow.”
