Friday, February 23 — Fiction Fun! Reads Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
7:00 p.m. in the Guild Room.

Station Eleven by Emily St.John Mandel. Station Eleven was a National Book Award finalist. Joshua Rothman, in a New Yorker article about it in November 2014, said that it’s not “a genre novel so much as a novel about genre.” As he added, it’s “set in a familiar genre universe, in which a pandemic has destroyed civilization. The twistthe thing that makes Station Eleven’ National Book Award materialis that the survivors are artists.”

The book was published in 2014, and it’s sold over a million and a half copies. It has the look of a popular novel, even a genre novel. Sigrid Nunez, one of the novelists we’ve read, said in a New York Times review that “Mandel is an able and exuberant story-teller” and praised her “nimble interweaving of her characters’ lives and fates.” Katy Waldman, looking back at the novel in the New Yorker in 2022, said, “It’s not always easy to pinpoint what makes a book unputdownable,’ what gives it the feverishly consuming quality that Station Eleven has. . . . But some of the book’s swiftness derives from its consistency—from a tone that never changes or breaks, slipping through your body like a pure, bright beam.”
