Friday, February 24 — Fiction Fun! Reads a New Translation of Camus, The Plague (1947)

7:00 p.m., in the Guild Room. We’re recommending the Laura Marris translation of The Plague, which dates from 2021, though some may stay with the Stuart Gilbert translation. Camus (1913–60) won the Nobel Prize for books of several sorts, before dying in a car crash. He was born in Algeria to parents of French descent, and this novel is set in Algeria. Not only is it about a plague, but it’s an allegory of France under the Nazis. By the late spring of 2020, it was reported to be “flying off the shelves,” establishing itself as the leader among covid-19 books. We’re in 2023, but we have the advantage of emotional distance and a new translation.
