Friday, October 27 — Theatre Ministry Presents a Screening of Beauty Bites Beast – 7:00 p.m. in the Forum.
Our aim with Beauty Bites Beast is to “normalize” the idea of women’s self-defense — and by extension the LGBTQ community and kids’ self-defense — as a human need and right. We want to inspire those on the fence to see that the drive to protect oneself is not a gendered attribute and to thereby get behind the movement to make empowerment self-defense accessible, portable and affordable.
Beauty Bites Beast, which was in contention for the Best Feature Documentary Oscar in 2017, features luminaries such as Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Dolores Huerta and Gavin de Becker, the worldwide best-selling author of “The Gift of Fear.” The film spans locations around the world, such as a factory in Mexico; the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks; a Nairobi slum and a martial arts studio in Jerusalem.
Watch as women, from students to octogenarians, launch into one of the most life-changing experiences of their lives: learning self-defense that uses their brains, voices, and bodies. You will hear from experts in law enforcement, social work, education, law and more as they address the resistance and cultural opposition to women’s self-defense, as well as those who advocate that verbal and physical self-defense for women should be as universally accepted and available as swimming lessons.
Journey with Ellen Snortland — journalist, author, and activist — as she explores the many myths and misunderstandings that surround women learning to defend themselves. Ellen will be available for discussion before and after the film. Information = Melissa Hayes at mhayes@allsaints-pas.org.
