On Thursday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church is the place to be for a festival Eucharist celebrating the work, witness and legacy of the Reverend Absalom Jones … the first African American priest in the Episcopal Church.
Born enslaved in 1746, Absalom Jones founded the first black Episcopal congregation in 1794 in Philadelphia “to arise out of the dust and shake ourselves, and throw off that servile fear, that the habit of oppression and bondage trained us up in.” For more about Absalom Jones, visit the Episcopal Archives’ “The Church Awakens: African Americans and the Struggle for Justice”
The Right Reverend Carl Wright, Bishop Suffragan for the Armed Forces will preach and preside at this special service and a reception will follow the service. Saint Barnabas is located at 1062 North Fair Oaks in Pasadena. All are welcome.
