On Sunday, January 21st we were honored to welcome Rocío Peña to the pulpit at our 1:00 p.m. Spanish service. Rocío has studied at the Leadership Institute of the Diocese of Los Angeles, she teaches Catechism to children and adults, and she is a Lay Eucharistic Minister. She is member of the Hispanic Ministry of the Diocese, serves on the Vestry at her church, Saint Philip the Evangelist located in south central Los Angeles, and she has been a delegate to the Diocesan Convention. We are honored to have had her voice as part of our “Season of Wisdom & Revelation” Epiphany Preaching series.

Jesus begins his ministry, calling four ordinary fishers, working and humble people.

I would like to focus today on the call that Jesus makes, not only to his disciples but to all of us.

I ask myself: What is God’s call?
In my humble opinion, and in my experience with the call of God, I believe that it is the love of God that pulls you in.

When does God call us?
At all times, since we are conceived, and throughout our life. We can think that there is a special moment for that call, when we listen carefully and respond to it with a “yes” or a “no.”

There is a special day for that call. Well, first of all we must understand that God always calls us, at every moment, every week, every time we can open our eyes, and when our heart beats, long before we are conceived, and we can see it by looking at the story of Jesus.

Jesus was chosen, and he was called long before he was conceived. This is how God calls all of us, because we belong to God. That call becomes at a special moment, when we are ready, when we give up, when we are tired of the life we lead, when that voice really becomes more intense, and we pay attention.

Have you ever wondered what is the purpose of that call? Why is God calling us? One of the answers in my opinion is, to be part of the kingdom of God and recognize him as our father / creator, putting our gifts at God’s service, and to transform our lives, and the world.

This is the most important reason: to love us, God calls us to love us.

John the Baptist shouted in the desert, “prepare the way of the Lord, turn to him!” It gets my attention when he says: “come back,” he does not say go. This expression means that we belong to God, and that we have forgotten God; that it is time to return to our creator, so that God can protect us with that infinite love that God has to give us.

Jesus says that he is the good shepherd, and that his sheep hear and recognize his voice. He came to this world to teach his disciples and begins his ministry with these four people, whom he calls, and they accept. They listen to that call and follow him. It is impressive the transformation that they experience, not only in their lives but the transformation in the world.

Many people feel unworthy of the call, we who are here, have heard that call and maybe we can respond “no,” because we feel ashamed of our past, because we feel guilty, because we are afraid, or because we think that for Jesus to calls us we have to be worthy. We feel that we have to have some special gift: a degree, or other requirements. We get confused thinking that when Jesus calls us, it is because he calls us to be lay leaders, bishops, deacons or priests.

But that is not the case, Jesus calls us to be better people every day, in whatever we are doing, in our daily lives, in our work, with our families. It calls us to improve as people, as friends, as brothers, as parents, as children. Jesus calls us to revolutionize everything that is not good, and a change our life. He calls us as he called each one of his disciples, because Jesus knew their heart, just as Jesus knows the hearts of each one of us, and that is why today he calls each one of us.

One of the calls that impressed me the most was the one that Jesus made to Saint Paul. One day talking with Reverend Nancy Fausto she asked me if I knew the story of St. Paul. She asked me this question because she noticed in me that feeling of insecurity, of wanting to serve God, but at the same time I felt unworthy to serve him. So, she sat down and talked to me. She asked me the question: Do you know the story of St. Paul? I answered in my ignorance, and I told her that Paul was a great man in the history of the church that evangelized through his letters; that he was a very wise and admirable man who evangelized many people. Rev. Fausto said with a smile: “I’m going to tell you the story behind St. Paul’s life.” This story struck me a lot, because what she told me was that he was called Saul of Tarsus, who was a Roman citizen, a well-studied man of Jewish origin, and with a lot of knowledge in the laws of God.

She also told me that he was a persecutor, and a murderer of Christians, that he was against the teachings of Jesus, and that he took the teachings of Jesus as blasphemy, as lies. Then, on the road to Damascus. Saul witnessed a manifestation of Jesus when he was going to arrest Peter.

Then there was a transformation in him, and then he could see Jesus and he could understand what his calling was. And how Jesus used him, that murderer and persecutor, to be able to evangelize people! Jesus transformed the life of Saul, baptized as Paul, who went from being a persecutor to becoming a follower of Jesus.

Now we call him Saint Paul, and until today he continues to evangelize us every time we read his letters to the different Churches. This is a wonderful thing, that gave me the opportunity to think: “if he was called by God being a murderer, maybe I have hope to serve God.”

After a long year of having that feeling, that Passion for serving God, one day I went to the altar, I got down on my knees and said to God that I have nothing to offer: I do not have money, I do not have a house, I do not have a car, I do not have family in this country, I am alone, I do not have talents and gifts to offer you, only one thing I have: it is my life, and I offer it to you; it is yours. I said to God: “Lord here I am, send me.”

My brothers and sisters in Christ, to say “yes” to God has a very important guarantee, and that is that your past is forgiven, that your present is blessed and that your future is secured in the hands of God. Do not be afraid to say “yes” today, because today is the day when God calls us, so that in everything we do, God will always be glorified. Amen.

Jesús comienza su ministerio , llamando a cuatro pescadores comunes y corrientes personas trabajadoras y humildes.

Me gustaría enfocar el tema en el llamado que Jesús hace No sólo a sus discípulos sino a todos nosotros y me pregunto,

¿cuál es el llamado de Dios?
En mi humilde opinión y en mi experiencia con el llamado de Dios , yo creo que es el amor de Dios que te arrastra.

¿Cuándo nos llama Dios?
En todo momento desde que somos concebidos y a lo largo de nuestra vida, podemos pensar que hay un momento especial de ese llamado,.Cuando lo escuchamos con atención y respondemos a él con un sí o con un no .

Hay un día especial de ese llamado, bueno primero que nada hay que entender que Dios siempre nos Llama a cada instante, cada semana, cada momento, en cada oportunidad que podemos abrir nuestros ojos y cuando nuestro corazón late, desde mucho antes que somos concebidos, y lo podemos comprobar viendo la historia de Jesús .

Jesús estaba elegido y fue llamado mucho antes de ser concebido. Así nos llama Dios a todos nosotros, porque le pertenecemos a Dios, pero se convierte en un momento especial cuando estamos listos , cuando nos rendimos , cuando estamos hartos de la vida que llevamos ,cuando realmente esa voz se hace más intensa y ponemos atención .

Alguna vez se han preguntado ¿ Cuál es el propósito de ese llamado?
para que nos estará llamando Dios?, una de las respuestas en mi opinión, es para ser parte del reino de Dios y reconocerlo como nuestro padre ,poniendo nuestros dones a su servicio y para transformar nuestras vidas y el mundo.

Esto es lo más importante para amarnos, Dios nos llama para amarnos.

Juan El Bautista gritaba en el desierto !¡preparen el camino del Señor, vuelvanse a él ! me llama mucho la atención cuando él dice vuelvanse no dice váyan, esta expresión significa que somos de Dios que le pertenecemos a Dios y que nos hemos olvidado el, que es momento de regresar a nuestro padre para que él pueda protegernos con ese infinito amor que tiene para darnos.

Jesús dice que el es el buen pastor y que sus ovejas escuchan y reconocen su voz , de esta manera . El vino a este mundo a enseñar a sus discípulos y empieza su ministerio con estas cuatro personitas, las cuales les llama y ellos aceptan y escuchan ese llamado y lo siguen es impresionante la transformación que hacen no sólo en sus vidas sino la transformación en el mundo.

Muchas personas se sienten indígnas de ese llamado, nosotros aquí presentes hemos escuchado ese llamado y tal vez podemos responder “no,” porque nos sentimos avergonzadas por nuestro pasado , porque nos sentimos culpables, porque tenemos miedo o porque pensamos que para que Jesús nos llame nosotros tenemos que ser dignos. Tenemos que tener algún Don especial, estudios con licenciatura y muchos requisitos, nos confundimos pensando que cuando Jesús nos llama es porque nos Llama a ser líderes laicos, obispos , diáconos o sacerdotes.

Pero no es asi , él nos llama para ser mejores personas cada día en lo que sea que nosotros estemos haciendo, Ya sea en nuestra vida diaria ,en nuestro trabajo, con nuestras familias. Nos Llama a mejorar como personas, como amigos, como hermanos, como padres, como hijos, a revolucionar todo lo malo y a un cambio de vida. Nos llama como llamó a cada uno de sus discípulos, pues Jesús conocía su corazón , al igual que Jesús conoce cada uno de nuestros corazones, y es por eso que hoy en día nos Llama a cada uno de nosotros.

Uno de los llamados que más me impresionó y fue, el que hizo Jesús a San Pablo. Un día platicando con la reverenda Nancy Fausto me preguntó si yo conocía la historia de San Pablo y esta pregunta fue porque notaba en mí esa sensación de inseguridad, de querer servir a Dios, pero a la vez sentirme indigna de servirle. Así que se sentó Y platicó conmigo y me contó esa historia la pregunta fue ¿Conoces la historia de San Pablo? yo en mi ignorancia respondí que sí y le dije que era un gran hombre en la historia de la iglesia que evangelizó por medio de sus cartas, un hombre muy sabio y admirable , que evangelizó a mucha gente , ella con una sonrisa me dijo: “te voy a contar la historia que hay detrás de San Pablo “ y esto Me impactó mucho, porque lo que ella me dijo Es que se llamaba Saulo de Tarso que era ciudadano Romano, un hombre muy estudiado de origen judío y con muchos conocimientos en las leyes de Dios.

También me contó que era un perseguidor y un asesino de cristianos, qué iba en contra de las enseñanzas de Jesús y que él tomaba las enseñanzas de Jesús como una blasfemia, como mentira y en el camino a Damasco Saulo fue testigo de una manifestación de Jesús cuando iba arrestar a Pedro.

Entonces hubo una transformación en el y entonces él Pudo ver a Jesús y pudo comprender cuál era su llamado y como Jesús lo uso, a ese Asesino y perseguidor para poder evangelizar a pueblos enteros. La transformación que había hecho Jesús en la vida de Saulo y ahora lo bautizó como Pablo y paso de ser el perseguidor hacer el seguidor de Jesús.

Ahora nosotros lo llamamos San Pablo que hasta el día de hoy sigue evangelizando cada que nosotros leemos sus cartas a las diferentes Iglesias , esto es algo maravilloso que me dio la oportunidad a mí de pensar si él fue llamado por Dios siendo un asesino tal vez yo tengo una la esperanza de servir a Dios.

Después de un largo año de retener ese sentimiento, esa Pasión por servir a Dios, un día fui ante el altar y me puse de rodillas y le dije no tengo nada Qué ofrecerte ,no tengo dinero, no tengo casa, no tengo carro , no tengo familia en este país , estoy sola, no tengo talentos y dones para ofrecerte sólo una cosa tengo: es mi vida y te la ofrezco, es tuya. Yo le dije a Dios señor heme aquí Envíame a mí.

Mis hermanos en Cristo el decir que sí a Diós tiene una garantía muy importante y esa es que tu pasado está perdonado, que tu presente está bendecido y que tu futuro está asegurado en las manos del Señor. No tengas miedo de decir que si el día de hoy, pues hoy es el día en que el Señor nos llama para que en todo lo que hagamos Dios siempre sea glorificado. Amén.
