January Jazz Vespers with John & Maya Proulx

Jazz Vespers with John and Maya Proulx, on Sunday, January 28, 5:00 p.m. on the Chancel.

The jazz scene is abuzz about singer, pianist, composer, and recording artist, John Proulx (pronounced “Proo”). His piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. In addition to touring with his own trio, John has performed with the likes of Anita O’Day, Natalie Cole, Melissa Manchester, and Marian McPartland.

Maya Proulx has been performing since studying piano and viola at South Pasadena Music Conservatory at four years old. She sang with the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and with the All Saints Children’s Choir as she trained vocally in classical and jazz styles. Proulx attended Arroyo Vista and South Pasadena Middle School before attending high school at California School of the Arts – Duarte. A versatile artist, Proulx studied creative writing, picked up classical guitar sophomore year and now plays in the CSArts jazz band as both guitarist and lead singer. She was recently named a 2024 YoungArts winner with distinction in VOICE, JAZZ the highest honor of the organization.

John recently wrote a book, Soundscapes, an educational book of beautiful and soothing original piano pieces for the intermediate pianist. Inspired by the music of George Winston, Soundscapes combines contemporary piano with jazz influenced chord changes and voicings. The simple melodies coupled with lush chords truly make it accessible music for all to enjoy! Validated parking will be available in Plaza las Fuentes. There is no charge. No reservations required.
