Jazz Vespers, October 13: Jessica Fichot, French Chanson/Shanghai Jazz

Sunday, Oct. 13, 5:00 p.m. on the Chancel. Featuring Jessica Fichot on vocals, accordion, toy piano; and Adrien Prévost on guitar; Jonathan Ahrens on bass; Sylvain Carton on clarinet & saxophone; and special guest Annie Zhou on guzheng (Chinese zither) Mike Kinman offers a meditation.

Accompanied by her accordion, toy piano, and fiery band, Los Angeles-based chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot draws from her multi-ethnic French, Chinese, and American heritage to create an intoxicating multilingual amalgamation of French chanson, 1940s Shanghai jazz, swing, and international folk.

With three acclaimed albums under her belt—Le Chemin, Le Secret, and Dear Shanghai—Jessica has brought her music to audiences around the world, regularly performing in China, Mexico, Canada, and across the U.S and western Europe. Backed by a group of talented musicians and singing in French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and English, Fichot can switch with ease from a lively French chanson to a moving Mexican classic or a jazzy Shanghai gem. The group performs styles that are varied but are always united by Fichot’s gorgeous, expressive singing voice.

An active composer, she has written hundreds of children’s songs for various educational programs, and she also composes interactive music for indie video games. Her original songs have been featured in movies, TV shows, and commercials.
