I so miss seeing your faces and feeling your hugs. And … I am daily moved at how I see you reaching out to each other and the world, finding creative new ways to be together and to love. You are amazing. God shines so powerfully through you. And I am deeply grateful we are All Saints Church.

I want to give you an update on what your vestry has been doing. We met last Tuesday, March 24 so I’m sorry it’s taken a little while to get this update to you. We are still adjusting to this vastly different way of communicating.

Our last meeting, we spent more than an hour just checking in with each other. We wanted everyone to share how they were doing and we knew that in listening to 30-35 stories we would get a sense of how the broader All Saints community is doing … and that would help us lead and care for each other better.

It was moving. We are all over the map, feeling all the things you are feeling – uncertainty, anxiety, hope, love, moments of fear, moments of joy, really missing being together, gratitude for the new ways we are coming together. And … what came through strongly was a fierce love for this community and trust that God is so deeply present and binding us together … and continuing to lead us out into the world.

We then spent some time talking about this new world we are in now … and how we can plan for being church in the best, most powerful ways when, frankly, we don’t know how long this time of physical distancing is going to last. We had people prepare for this meeting by watching and reading hard data about COVID19 from medical experts. We talked about how things scheduled for mid-to-late summer like the Olympics and the Lambeth Conference were being postponed. And we were unanimous in saying that we will gather again physically only when public health professionals and epidemiologists tell us that it is safe to do so. One of the strengths of All Saints Church is our conviction that science and faith not only can coexist but must coexist … and as people of deep faith, we are going to listen to the scientists because right now they are the ones telling us how best to love each other by keeping each other safe.

We also talked about our value of prioritizing the care of those most vulnerable, and how we needed to continue to shift energy into reaching out into the broader Pasadena community to help where we are needed. And we talked about how staff and ministry leaders were living in this really hard place of not knowing when we were going to be back physically together and how that made it really hard to plan for the future.

So given all this, the vestry decided that for planning purposes, we are not going to count on being able to gather physically the way we are used to through the summer. Certainly, if public health professionals tell us we can come back safely earlier, we will be thrilled. And we are just going to start planning for it now … because this will let us focus our energies both on being the church for one another in this new reality … and just as important focus on how we can help those most vulnerable among us and reach out into the community.

I’m sad about not getting together physically for awhile … and I’m excited that I already see us moving into this new reality in powerful ways. All Saints Church has always been about putting our faith into action and living God’s love out loud. Our Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley Community needs us right now and already we are stepping up and now we are going to be able to say “we are going to look forward to a great, big, huge celebration when we can get together again … and for now we are going to focus on how can we serve and love the best in a world that deeply needs it.”

We heard updates from our new senior and junior wardens, Juan Mejia and Monique Thomas and expressed gratitude that our former wardens, MaryAnn Ahart and Steve Williams are going to be not only staying on vestry because their terms aren’t up, but staying on as special counsels to the wardens and to me during this pandemic time … mostly because we’ve discovered we all work together so well as a team.

We talked about how deeply we value your generosity to All Saints Church. The phrase “now more than ever” can be over-used and its intent lost through repetition, and I think it has special meaning now. Hola… Mi nombre es Mike Kinman, y estoy profundamente agradecido de ser el rector de la Iglesia de Todos los Santos.

Extraño mucho ver sus caras y sentir sus abrazos. Y… Me conmueve a diario ver cómo ustedes se acercan el uno al otro y al mundo, encontrando nuevas maneras creativas de estar juntos y de amarse. Ustedes son increíbles. Dios brilla tan poderosamente a través de ustedes. Y estoy profundamente agradecido de que seamos la Iglesia de Todos los Santos.

Quiero darles una actualización de lo que su Junta Parroquial ha estado haciendo. Nos reunimos el martes pasado, 24 de marzo, así que lamento que me haya tomado un poco de tiempo para darles esta actualización a ustedes. Todavía nos estamos adaptando a esta forma peculiar de comunicarnos.

En nuestra última reunión, pasamos más de una hora checando el uno con el otro. Queríamos que todos compartieran cómo estaban y sabíamos que al escuchar 30-35 historias tendríamos una idea de cómo está la comunidad de la Iglesia de Todos los Santos en general … y esto nos ayudaría a liderar y cuidarnos mejor el uno al otro.

Fue conmovedor. Estuvimos en todo el espectro, sintiendo todas las cosas que ustedes sienten: incertidumbre, ansiedad, esperanza, amor, momentos de miedo, momentos de alegría, realmente añorando a estar juntos, gratitud por las nuevas formas en que nos estamos uniendo. Y… lo que vino a través de un amor feroz por esta comunidad fue la confianza de que Dios está tan profundamente presente y nos une… y continua guiándonos y caminando con nosotros en el mundo.

Luego pasamos algún tiempo hablando de este nuevo mundo en el que estamos ahora … y cómo podemos planear ser iglesia de la mejor y más poderosa manera cuando, francamente, no sabemos cuánto tiempo va a durar este tiempo de distanciamiento físico. Hicimos que la gente se preparara para esta reunión observando y leyendo datos reales sobre COVID19 de expertos médicos. Hablamos de cómo se estaban posponiendo las cosas previstas para mediados y finales del verano, como los Juegos Olímpicos y la Conferencia de Lambeth. Y fuimos unánimes al decir que nos reuniremos de nuevo físicamente sólo cuando los profesionales de la salud pública y los epidemiólogos nos digan que es seguro hacerlo. Una de las fortalezas de la Iglesia de Todos los Santos es nuestra convicción de que la ciencia y la fe no sólo pueden coexistir, sino que deben coexistir… y como personas de fe profunda, vamos a escuchar a los científicos porque ahora mismo son los que nos dicen la mejor manera de amarnos el uno al otro manteniéndose a salvo.

También hablamos sobre nuestro valor de priorizar la atención a los más vulnerables, y cómo necesitábamos seguir trasladando la energía de llegar a la comunidad más amplia de Pasadena para ayudar donde se nos necesita. Y hablamos de cómo el personal y los líderes del ministerio vivían en este lugar realmente difícil de no saber cuándo íbamos a estar físicamente juntos y cómo eso hacía realmente difícil planear para el futuro.

Así que dado todo esto, la junta parroquial decidió que para fines de planificación, no vamos a contar con poder reunirnos físicamente de la manera a la que estamos acostumbrados durante el verano. Ciertamente, si los profesionales de la salud pública nos dicen que podemos volver sanos y salvos antes, estaremos encantados. Y vamos a empezar a planearlo ahora … porque esto nos permitirá centrar nuestras energías tanto en ser la iglesia el uno para el otro en esta nueva realidad … y un enfoque igual de importante en cómo podemos ayudar a los más vulnerables entre nosotros y llegar a la comunidad.

Estoy triste por no reunirme físicamente por un tiempo … y estoy emocionado de que ya nos estamos moviendo a esta nueva realidad de manera poderosa. Toda la Iglesia de Todos los Santos siempre ha tratado de poner nuestra fe en acción y vivir el amor de Dios en voz alta. Nuestra comunidad de Pasadena y del Valle de San Gabriel nos necesita ahora mismo y ya estamos dando un paso adelante y ahora vamos a poder decir “vamos a tener una gran fiesta, una gran celebración cuando podamos reunirnos de nuevo … pero por ahora vamos a centrarnos en cómo podemos servir y amar de la lo mejor manera en un mundo que lo necesita profundamente”.
