centering prayer

Centering Prayer is a form of contemplative prayer that is rooted in the Christian tradition and the wisdom saying of Jesus, “When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to God in secret. And God, who sees in secret, will repay you” (Matt 6:6). It is a discipline of intentional silence, where the individual, in trusting faith, empties their self to become entirely receptive to God’s divine love. This is a prayer of surrendering life as lived on our terms to receive the indwelling love of God given to us.  Each person chooses a word to help them keep focus and as a reminder of their intention to remain open to God’s love.

During COVID-19, Centering Prayer
is meeting online every Tuesday from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Meeting Instructions & Format

A few minutes before 7:00 p.m, click on the Zoom link from your computer or mobile phone and it will bring you into our prayer circle. If you come late that is fine — join as you can but be sure to mute your device for those who are praying. To join us, please email us to be added to our list of invitees.

Format

7:05 p.m. — We gather together and greet one another.
7:10 p.m. — We become silent (mute your device) and together listen to a short reading from the mystics, scripture, or a poem. This is followed by reciting together the focusing phrase:

PSALM 46:10
Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.

One tone of the singing bowl starts the silent prayer meditation.
At the end of 20 minutes there will be three tones of the singing bowl to end our sit.
Our time together may conclude with a short video or audio of a contemplative speaker (i.e. Thomas Keating, Richard Rohr, James Finley, Cynthia Bourgeault).

We end at 8:00pm.

No previous meditation experience necessary.
