At 6 pm, Monday October 1st, Pasadena Interfaith leaders from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities are inviting men to gather with them on the steps of City Hall in a statement of solidarity with women who are survivors of sexual abuse and in witness to their commitment to change the culture of sexual abuse.

“We listened to a diverse group of women tell us what would feel like meaningful solidarity to them and we have tried to design an action that is faithful to what we are hearing,” said Mike Kinman of All Saints Church. “This is a moment both for men to step up, speak out and act … and also to shut up, listen and believe. This is our way of doing both.”

“The social and political climate in our country requires that men affirm their responsibilities and obligations to stand as upright moral figures in support of women and in an effort to protect space for people to be heard,” said Rabbi Noam Raucher of the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center.

“We recognize that the prevailing patriarchy in America and around the globe exists only because of our own actions and inactions as men,” said Tarek Shawky, a Pasadena Muslim lay leader, and co-organizer of the event. “It’s time to take responsibility by supporting, listening, and believing the voices that have been marginalized for too long.

This will be a brief (15-minute) bilingual (English/Spanish) action. There will be the reading of a statement of solidarity and litany of commitment followed by three minutes of silence in recognition of the more than one in three women who experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. Men are encouraged to wear black and will have an opportunity to sign a statement of solidarity and commitment — creating an opportunity to stand up and affirm their responsibility to do the work of dismantling a culture of patriarchy and sexual abuse.

“As men we need to step up, not to take this moment from women, but to stand beside those who identify as women, own our responsibility for a culture that enables and excuses the abuse of women, and commit to dismantling that culture,” said Kinman.

Local activist and event co-organizer Andre Henry said: “Too often, men have been complicit in the suffering of women, trans and non-binary people–especially those of color–by not confronting the culture of toxic masculinity in our society. It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time for that to change. We’re here to acknowledge that we men have a responsibility to be an enthusiastic part of that change.

Endorsers of the event include All Saints Church and CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic justice). Organizers include Kinman, Raucher, Henry, Shawky, Antonio Gallardo, and Jonathan Klein.

6 pm, Lunes 1ro de Octubre– Escaleras del Oeste, Alcaldía de la Ciudad de Pasadena

El Lunes 1ro de octubre los líderes Interreligiosos de Pasadena de las comunidades Cristiana, Judía y Musulmana invitan a todos los hombres a reunirse con ellos en los escalones de la Alcaldía en una declaración de solidaridad con las mujeres que son sobrevivientes de abuso sexual, y en testimonio de su compromiso de cambiar la cultura del abuso sexual.

“Escuchamos a un grupo diverso de mujeres decirnos qué les haría sentirse apoyadas en un acto de solidaridad significativa con ellas, y hemos tratado de diseñar una acción que sea fiel a lo que estamos escuchando”, dijo Mike Kinman de la iglesia de Todos los Santos. “Este es un momento tanto para que los hombres se levanten, hablen y actúen … como también para que se callen, escuchen y crean. Esta es nuestra manera de hacer ambas cosas.”

“El clima social y político en nuestro país requiere que los hombres afirmen sus responsabilidades y obligaciones para presentarse como figuras moralmente rectas en apoyo de las mujeres y hacienda un esfuerzo por proteger el espacio para que las personas sean escuchadas, ” dijo el rabino Noam Raucher del Templo y Centro Judío de Pasadena.

“Reconocemos que el patriarcado prevaleciente en los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo existe sólo debido a nuestras propias acciones e inacciones como hombres”, dijo Tarek Shawky, un líder laico musulmán de Pasadena y coorganizador del evento. “Es hora de asumir la responsabilidad apoyando, escuchando y creyendo en las voces que han sido marginadas por tanto tiempo”.

Esta será una acción breve (de 15 minutos) y bilingüe (inglés / español). Se leerá una declaración de solidaridad y una letanía de compromiso seguida de tres minutos de silencio en reconocimiento a las más de una de cada tres mujeres que han vivido violencia física o sexual en su vida. Se invita a los hombres a vestirse de negro y todos tendrán la oportunidad de firmar la declaración de solidaridad y compromiso, creando una oportunidad para levantarse y afirmar su responsabilidad de hacer el trabajo de desmantelar una cultura de patriarcado y abuso sexual.

“Como hombres tenemos que dar un paso adelante, no robarles este momento a las mujeres, sino apoyar a quienes se identifican como mujeres, asumir nuestra responsabilidad de una cultura que permite y excusa el abuso de las mujeres, y comprometernos a desmantelar esa cultura”. dijo Kinman.

El activista local y organizador del evento Andre Henry dijo: “Con demasiada frecuencia, los hombres han sido cómplices del sufrimiento de las mujeres, las personas transexuales y las personas no binarias, especialmente las de color, al no enfrentar la cultura de masculinidad tóxica en nuestra sociedad. Y no tiene que ser así. Es hora de que eso cambie. Estamos aquí para reconocer que los hombres tenemos la responsabilidad de ser una parte entusiasta de ese cambio.”
