Traditionally “La Posada” commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for shelter in preparation for Jesus’ birth. This year, on Thursday December 22 — in the shadow of looming public policy decisions by the incoming presidential administration — the Pasadena Community “La Posada” becomes a symbolic representation of the search for protection for immigrants and refugees targeted for oppression and marginalization.

The Community Posada is sponsored by the Latino-Hispanic Ministry and Immigration Task Force of All Saints Church.

“As we recreate the historic journey of Mary and Joseph, we emphasize the fight for justice and our commitment to comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform,” said Antonio Gallardo, pastor for Latino Ministries at All Saints Church. “We recognize the economic, social and cultural contributions of immigrants to the country and call for an end to the separation of families, and avoids the dismantling of the rights already protected.”

The traditional pilgrimage will depart from the church and will include a representation of the holy family in their search for refuge, making symbolic stops at City Hall, the Pasadena Police Department and the Courthouse.

The pilgrimage will return to the Church, and the celebration will conclude with tamales, snacks and the participation of “Universidad Autónoma de México” teaching children and families how to make piñatas.
