June 24th Rector’s Forum – Journalism: Saving Democracy One Story At A Time

It was the work of two stellar investigative journalists that uncovered the USC sex-abuse scandal that led to the recent resignation of the university’s president and these words from a trustee statement following that resignation: “We have heard the message that something is broken and that urgent and profound actions are needed. We will rebuild our culture to reflect an environment in which safety and transparency are of paramount importance, and to institute systemic change that will prevent this from occurring in the future.”

On Sunday, June 24 we welcome to the Rector’s Forum those two journalists to reflect not only on the impact of this important story and its aftermath but also on the role of journalism in general — and investigative journalism in particular — in protecting and preserving our fragile democracy.

LA Times journalists Harriet Ryan and Matt Hamilton will be interviewed by John Horn — long-time All Saints parishioner and the host of KPCC’s “The Frame.

Harriet Ryan is an investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times. Since joining the paper in 2008, she has written about high-profile people, including Phil Spector, Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, and institutions, including USC, the Catholic Church, the Kabbalah Centre and Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin.

Matt Hamilton is a reporter in the Metro section for the Los Angeles Times. He has covered legal affairs, crime and breaking news across California. He joined The Times in 2013 as an intern reporting on criminal trials in Los Angeles County. Hamilton was part of the team of reporters that received a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino.

John Horn is the host of The Frame on KPCC (89.3-FM), a daily arts and entertainment program. He previously was a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times, where he covered the film business for more than a decade. Before joining The Times, Horn was a senior writer at Newsweek magazine, a senior editor at Premiere magazine, an entertainment reporter for The Associated Press, and a television reporter for the Orange County Register.
