Rector’s Forum, October 27: Direct Relief

“The dilemma of our times is, are we only going to do it if there’s a financial reason to do it? And clearly we know how to do it, but you see the dislocation in emergencies. We’ve been working extensively in Puerto Rico. If there’s no financial driver these tools that have been developed aren’t applied. So you see kind of the cleavages in society, the division, where if there’s a reason to service you financially you will be very well served. If there’s not a reason to serve you financially, you will be relatively less-well served going forward. And that’s a tragedy, because we have more tools available now to address problems and solve them than ever before in human history. And if we choose only to apply them to those things for which there’s a … large financial return, I don’t think the notion that we’re evolving as a species to a better enlightened state will be proven true.”
