Reimagining Justice in the Age of Mass Incarceration

All Saints is honored to be the venue for Reimagining Justice in the Age of Mass Incarceration — a conference sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and Prism Restorative Justice

Scheduled presenters for the March 5-7 event include:

Fr. Greg Boyle — founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world.
Sister Helen Prejean — author of “Dead Man Walking” who began her prison ministry in 1981 when she dedicated her life to the poor of New Orleans.
Vijay Gupta & the Street Symphony — As artists and citizens, the musicians of Street Symphony ask: what is the role of the artist to heal and inspire – but also to ask brave questions and tell important stories?
The Actor’s Gang — The Actors‘ Gang Prison Project started in 2006 in response to Caifornia’s huge recidivism rate and excessive overcrowding.

Mass incarceration ranks high among the injustices of our day, splitting families and communities, perpetuating racism, and failing to deliver the very thing it promises: justice. What does true justice look like in our current context? This conference will study that question from a multifaceted perspective, looking at diverse approaches to justice, including:

• legislative solutions, both to help reduce the number of people behind bars and to improve conditions for those returning to freedom after incarceration

• models for providing compassionate care for those who are incarcerated

• re-entry programs to help formerly-incarcerated people rebuild their lives

• restorative justice programs that look beyond punishment for a fuller picture of justice

Prioritizing the voices of formerly incarcerated people, those working on the front lines, and those whose ideas challenge our preconceptions of what criminal justice looks like, this conference will bring new perspectives for those who have long been working against mass incarceration and for those new to the struggle.
