On Sunday, October 21st we are thrilled to welcome home to All Saints Church our own Tena Clark. Grammy Award-winning artist, long-time parishioner and transformative agent of love, justice and compassion, Tena joins us at 10:15 a.m. in the Rector’s Forum to share her new book: Southern Discomfort: A Memoir.
Described as “a brave and wildly engrossing memoir” Southern Discomfort tells Tena’s story of growing up in Mississippi in the 50’s & 60’s … with a narrative that draws the reader in to the story of the South going from old to new.
From one review:
With its Southern setting and themes of racial conflict and civil rights, it’s easy to see how this book has been compared to “The Help.” But Clark’s debut is an entirely original—and true—story. In the Grammy Award–winning songwriter and producer’s memoir, she reveals a Southern gothic tale of growing up in 1950s Waynesboro, Mississippi, a lesbian raised by a womanizing father, an alcoholic mother, and a household of African-American help whom she’d sooner call family. Long before the author went on to become a renowned music producer, she was a little girl trying to make sense of her confusing world on the cusp of integration.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Tena’s story and welcome her “home” to All Saints Church … where she was one of the groundbreaking members of the LGBTQ cohort who both encouraged and challenged then rector George Regas to move forward with the first blessings of same-sex couples back in 1992 — a story preserved for us in this YouTube clip.
Books will be available for purchase.
