This Sunday at All Saints: Advent One with Dr. Wil Gafney

We begin the New Church Year at All Saints Church this year with a celebration of the First Sunday of Advent that includes the long-time traditions of Advent Wreath lighting and familiar Advent hymns — and the launch of a brand new adventure of a year-long journey into “The Women’s Lectionary.”

How would a lectionary centering women’s stories, chosen with womanist and feminist commitments in mind frame the presentation of the scriptures for proclamation and teaching? What would it look like if women built a lectionary focusing on women’s stories? How is the story of God told when stories of women’s brutalization and marginalization are moved from the margins of canon and lectionary, and held in the center in tension with stories of savvy and strong women, women whose contribution is not limited to or does not even include childbearing?

This Sunday, November 29 at All Saints Church, we will begin to find out as we premiere the Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney Women’s Lectionary, which we will be using throughout the coming year. We are honored to have Dr. Gafney with us at the Rector’s Forum at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time and preaching at our 11:15 a.m. service.

We will be live-streaming from the beautiful interior of All Saints Church. Ministers of the liturgy will be observing the social distance and safety protocols dictated by health care professionals and in compliance with our diocesan guidelines. And while we all long for the time when we can safely return for in person congregational worship, being able to center our online service in our familiar and beloved sanctuary is one step toward that eventual goal.
