In the Rector’s Forum
Dr. Leah Torres: The Work and Witness of an Abortion Provider

For nearly thirty years All Saints Church has been a Prayerfully Pro-Choice Church. The language of our Vestry Resolution is as true today as it was when it was written in 1989: We remain deeply concerned about the efforts to deny women the safe and legal abortions protected under Roe vs. Wade (1973) and convinced that a pregnant woman is the moral agent in the profound and personal decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy. The struggle to affirm, confirm and protect that moral agency has arguably never been more intense than in this current moment in our national discourse. And so on Sunday, September 30th we are honored to welcome to the Rector’s Forum Dr. Leah Torres – a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology and a national leader in talking about how crucial the work of abortion providers is in protecting that autonomy and as part of holistic medical care.
Dr. Torres writes, “No one’s opinion or belief on the topic of abortion matters except that of the woman facing this unimaginably difficult decision. My opinion doesn’t matter, your opinion doesn’t matter, nor the opinion of legislators who don’t even know how a Pap smear is done. This is a fight about a woman’s autonomy and I fight every day to protect her from scorn, shame and guilt over what can only be one of the most difficult decisions she will ever face. I fight to protect her free will and her ability to ensure her own health and well-being. Only she can know what is best for her and her family. Pro-life? Yes, I am. I fight every day to protect her life from harmful legislation that is rejected by medical professionals and supported by political zealots.”
