9:00 a.m. in the Forum: The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles After 1945
with author Becky Nicolaides
Becky Nicolaides is a historian, author and expert on the American suburbs. Her latest book, The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles After 1945 has just been published and traces how L.A.’s suburban communities (including Pasadena) “transitioned from lily-white to multiracial and reveals the compelling stories that unfolded through that change.” The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America’s cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation–rich, poor, Black American, Latino, Asian, immigrant, the unhoused, the lavishly housed, and everyone in between. Stories of everyday suburban life, in the process, have taken on new inflections. Come hear Becky talk about her new book … and get a signed copy from our partners at Octavia’s Bookshelf! Featured Ministry This Sunday: All Saints Greeter Ministry
The All Saints Greeters Ministry serves to warmly greet all people who come to All Saints and to draw them into closer communion with God and our community. We offer an inclusive, warm, and non-judgmental welcome; seeking to be the embodiment of what we mean when we say that All Saints offers a “radical welcome” to everyone. The Greeters Ministry’s responsibilities include staffing the Welcome Table and acting as roving ambassadors before and after Sunday morning services. We generally host a Welcome Table at special events and evening services such as Jazz Vespers. There is no better way to become part of our community than by volunteering as a Greeter. Consider yourself invited! Join us on the lawn after the 10:00 a.m. service.
Children’s Chapel during the 10 a.m. service!
Kindergarten through 5th graders! Come one, come all and join us for Children’s Chapel during the 10:00 a.m. service, where children will experience music, arts and crafts, meditations, storytelling, wiggly fun, spiritual practices for kids and so much more! Children’s Chapel is a space for your child to build church community with children their own age, celebrate diverse cultures and explore who/what God means to them. Here at All Saints, we encourage children and youth to show up as their fully authentic selves every day, ask questions and love one other fiercely through modeling it for them, first, and through our weekly discussions! It is never a dull moment in Children’s Chapel, so please join us! Parents are always welcome. Let’s celebrate and connect! For information please contact Nina Scherer at nscherer@allsaints-pas.org.

The Way of Love continues at 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. in the Guild Room
The Way of Love is a way of life. More than a program or a curriculum, it is an intentional commitment to a set of practices. It’s a commitment to follow Jesus: Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest. We’ll journey together through Sunday, February 25. Led by the Rev. Dori Torrey.
12:00 – 2:00 p.m., in Sweetland Hall — Five Season Cooking Class: First Class — Winter–Water Season
This is the first in a series of five classes related to using food and spiritual practices for healing and, of course, great taste. Each one will correspond to one of the five seasons (you’ll learn about the fifth season in the class). Scott Sayre studied healing cooking at the Boston Kushi Institute, followed up by advanced training at The East-West Center in Culver City where he learned Five Season Healing, and eventually became a master chef. In-person class for January is currently full. Spots on Zoom are still available. Suggested $20 to cover cost of food in the in-person class. Zoom is free. For information or to register please email: sayrecooking@gmail.com or join on zoom here.
Also at 12:00 p.m. A New Small Group for Urban Walkers, in the OCC Conference Room
You are invited to imagine an All Saints small group that gets us out in the fresh air, using our own two feet as we can explore Pasadena and the greater LA area. Together! So many of us love our “urban living” and wouldn’t want to live any other way… the variety of foods/restaurants, museums, music/theater, multi-culture communities where we share and learn from one another, and of course, All Saints! However, as we buzz by in our own little capsules (cars, Metro, Uber), we can easily miss the fact that there is much more that urban living has to offer, up close, personal. Let us slow down! Let us allow our senses to explore! Our Goals: exercise, camaraderie, exploring, encourage one another, reflection. Let’s talk about it! A light lunch will be provided. Register here. This is a listening and organizing meeting. All are welcome. Bring your ideas! Facilitator: Robb Grimm. Questions: Amanda McCormick at amccormick@allsaints-pas.org.
Circle of Life meets at 2:30 on Zoom. This is a support group for those living with the declining health of someone they love — and you can join them for conversation, sharing, support, and assistance in finding your way through this challenging time, led by Rev. Dori Torrey. Zoom Meeting ID: 891 9112 5961. Passcode: 829371.
From 5:00 p.m. on the Chancel, January Jazz Vespers: John & Maya Proulx
The jazz scene is abuzz about singer, pianist, composer, and recording artist, John Proulx (pronounced “Proo”). His piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. In addition to touring with his own trio, John has performed with the likes of Anita O’Day, Natalie Cole, Melissa Manchester, and Marian McPartland. Maya Proulx has been performing since studying piano and viola at South Pasadena Music Conservatory at four years old. She sang with the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and with the All Saints Children’s Choir as she trained vocally in classical and jazz styles. A versatile artist, Maya studied creative writing, picked up classical guitar sophomore year and now plays in the CSArts jazz band as both guitarist and lead singer. She was recently named a 2024 YoungArts winner with distinction in VOICE, JAZZ the highest honor of the organization! Validated parking will be available in Plaza las Fuentes. There is no charge. No reservations required. Info = www.johnproulx.com.
Streaming at 10:00 a.m. is offered on our website’s live stream page, our Facebook page and our YouTube channel. Check out our live streaming page to download service leaflets and take part in our action of the week.
++++++++
For in-person worship, our guiding principle remains to follow common sense risk reduction guidance for as long as we remain in a declared public health pandemic, so to keep our community safe and well, our in-person worship guidelines include:
- (as of 1/30/23) Because Los Angeles County, including Pasadena, currently have low levels of COVID-19, masks are recommended, but not required, for everyone indoors.
- Masks are optional outdoors.
- Both outdoor and indoor seating is available for services and communion will be served in both locations.
- Our expectation is that those entering the church will be vaccinated (if vaccination is available to them)
- Those who choose to be unvaccinated are requested to participate online.
- Those seated indoors are asked to maintain social distance between individuals/households.
- If we reach seating capacity in the church, ushers will guide you to alternative seating areas.
- We ask you not enter if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: fever over 100.4°F or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, or if you have had contact in the last 14 days with someone diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID- 19.
