“On this Feast of Pentecost we celebrate the Holy Spirit and her message of love that knows no language and knows every language.”

How is it that each of us hear these words in our own native tongue?
¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros escucha estas palabras en nuestra propia lengua materna?

For each of us there was a first time
Para cada uno de nosotros hubo una primera vez
There was a first time we were gazed upon
Hubo una primera vez cuando fuimos contemplados
And held/ Y abrazados
And nuzzled in the crook of an arm.
Y acariciados allí donde el brazo está conectado al resto del cuerpo.
For each of us there was a first word.
Para cada uno de nosotros hubo una primera palabra.
a first song / una primera canción
a first sound that reached our ears.
un primer sonido que llegó a nuestros oídos.
It was a word, a song, a sound that told us that in this new world of strange sights and sounds and sensations that there could be safety.
Fue una palabra, una canción, un sonido que nos decían que en este nuevo mundo de visiones y sonidos extraños y sensaciones podría haber seguridad.
That there could be love / Que podría haber amor
That there could be home / Que podría haber un hogar
And that it could be for us
Y que podría ser para nosotros.
No matter what happened after that moment.
Sin importar lo que sucediera después de ese momento.
No matter how perfectly or imperfectly we have been loved.
Sin importar cuán perfecta o imperfectamente nos hayan amado
No matter how much we have been embraced or how painfully we have been abused.
Sin importar cuánto nos hayan acogido, o cuán dolorosamente nos hayan maltratado.
No matter whether our lives have been tales of adoration or abandonment or most likely a holy mess of both.
Sin importar si nuestras vidas han sido cuentos de adoración o abandono o muy probablemente un desorden sagrado de ambos.
For each one of us there was that first gaze
Para cada uno de nosotros hubo esa primera mirada
That first embrace / Ese primer abrazo.
That first word, that first song, that first sound that reached our ears.
Esa primera palabra, esa primera canción, ese primer sonido que llegó a nuestros oídos.
That told us that love was out there.
Eso que nos dijo que el amor estaba allí
And that love could be for us.
Y ese amor podría ser para nosotros.
And for the rest of our lives, we have been trying to get it back.
Y por el resto de nuestras vidas hemos estado tratando de recuperarlo.
That feeling of safety / Esa sensación de seguridad.
Of love /De amor.
Of home /De hogar.
That feeling of being fully known and fully loved.
Esa sensación de ser plenamente conocidos y plenamente amados.
That feeling of being fully understood and fully appreciated.
Esa sensación de ser plenamente comprendidos y plenamente apreciados.
That feeling that there could be a safe place to grow
Esa sensación de que podría haber un lugar seguro para crecer.
And to flourish /Y florecer
And to become / Y convertirse en algo / alguien
I look for it from you / Yo lo busco en ti.
You look for it from me / Tu lo buscas en mí.
We look for it from each other
Lo buscamos el uno del otro.
We pray for it from God / Y oramos a Dios.
We look for it in this place / Lo buscamos en este lugar.
And when we find it we rejoice.
Y cuando lo encontramos, nos regocijamos.
And yet we also fear.
Y sin embargo, también tememos.
We fear that it will slip away / Tememos que se escape.
We fear that it will become something else.
Tememos que se convierta en algo más.
We fear that the voice, the song, the sound will no longer be the same.
Tememos que la voz, la canción, el sonido ya no sean lo mismo.
That this will no longer be a safe place
Que este ya no será un lugar seguro
A place of being known.
Un lugar donde seamos conocidos.
A place of being loved.
Un lugar donde seamos amados.
A place that is home / Un lugar que es casa.
It is so human, this fear / Este miedo es tan humano,
It is so human because our whole lives we have been taught that love fades and safety is fleeting.
Es tan humano porque durante toda nuestra vida nos han enseñado que el amor se desvanece y que la seguridad es fugaz.
It is so human because our whole lives we have been taught that difference is threat.
Es tan humano porque toda nuestra vida nos han enseñado que la diferencia es una amenaza.
It is so human because this fear is all around us.
Es tan humano porque este miedo nos rodea por todos lados.
The fear is around us as our president calls people from other lands not images of God, but animals.
El miedo nos rodea porque nuestro presidente dice que las personas de otras tierras no son imágenes de Dios, sino animales.
The fear is around us as the Israeli soldier sets his gunsights on a Palestinian child he sees as threat and not as sister.
El miedo nos rodea cuando el soldado israelí pone en la mira de su arma a una niña palestina a la que ve como una amenaza, y no como una hermana.
The fear is around us as our neighborhoods change and new generations rise and the only thing that seems certain about the future is that we will be less and less able to predict what that future will be.
El miedo nos rodea a medida que cambian nuestros vecindarios y surgen nuevas generaciones y lo único que parece seguro sobre el futuro es que cada vez seremos menos capaces de predecir cuál será ese futuro.
It is so human, this fear / Este miedo es tan humano,
We fall into it so naturally, so easily.
Que caemos en él tan naturalmente, tan fácilmente.
Because we have been taught that love fades and safety is fleeting and difference is threat.
Porque nos han enseñado que el amor se desvanece y la seguridad es fugaz y la diferencia es una amenaza.
And yet today … we remember.
Y sin embargo, hoy … lo recordamos.
Today we remember there is nothing to fear.
Hoy recordamos que no hay nada que temer.
Because today is Pentecost / Porque hoy es Pentecostés
Today God’s Holy Spirit whispers in our ear.
Hoy el Espíritu Santo de Dios nos susurra al oído.
She whispers the song, the sound, the word that we heard at our birth.
Ella susurra la canción, el sonido, la palabra que escuchamos cuando nacimos.
She speaks to us in the language of our heart and tells us that there is safety.
Ella nos habla en el idioma de nuestro corazón y nos dice que hay seguridad.
There is love / Que hay amor.
There is home / Que hay un hogar
And it is for us / Y es para nosotros.
It is for each of us / Y es para cada uno de nosotros.
It is for all of us / Y es para todos nosotros.
Today God’s Holy Spirit whispers in our ear in the language of our heart.
Hoy el Espíritu Santo de Dios nos susurra al oído en el lenguaje de nuestro corazón.
And we hear her whispering not just to us.
Y la escuchamos susurrar no solo a nosotros.
But to every one of us.
Pero a todos y a cada uno de nosotros.
A thousand different sounds / Mil sonidos diferentes
A thousand different songs / Mil canciones diferentes
A thousand different languages / Mil idiomas diferentes
The Sufi mystic Rumi says “The heart has its own language. The heart knows a hundred thousand ways to speak.”
El místico sufí Rumi dice: “El corazón tiene su propio lenguaje. El corazón conoce cientos de miles de formas de hablar ”
And today we hear them all.
Y hoy escuchamos todos los idiomas.
And we do not need to fear / Y no necesitamos temer
Because they are all saying / Porque todos ellos dicen.
Love / Amor
Love / Amor
Love / Amor
Love from God / Amor de Dios.
Love for God / Amor por Dios.
Love for you / Amor para ti.
Love for me / Amor para mi.
Love for everyone / Amor para todos.
Love for the Israeli soldier / Amor para el soldado Israelí.
Love for the Palestinian child / Amor por la niña Palestina.
Love for the immigrant / Amor por el inmigrante
Love for the president / Amor por el Presidente
Love for the Muslim / Amor por el musulmán
Love for the transgender teenager
Amor por el adolesente transgénero.
Love for Franklin Graham / Amor por Franklin Graham.
Love for the abuser / Amor por el abusador.
Love for the abused / Amor por los abusados.
Love for the abandoner / Amor por que el abandona.
Love for the abandoned / Amor por los abandonados.
Love that urges us to never stop demanding justice.
El amor que nos urge a nunca dejar de exigir justicia.
Love that pleads with us to love courageously in the face of evil.
Amor que nos suplica que amemos valientemente frente al mal.
Love that is greater, so much greater than any fear, than every fear that can grip our hearts.
El amor es más grande, mucho más grande que cualquier miedo, que cualquier temor que pueda atrapar nuestros corazones.
Love that can change our lives.
El amor que puede cambiar nuestras vidas.
Love that can change the world.
El amor que puede cambiar el mundo.
Love for you / El amor por ti
Love for me / El amor por mi
Love for everyone / El amor por todos
Love that we need never fear running out.
EL amor que hace que nunca tengamos miedo de salir corriendo.
Love that we need never fear not being enough.
El amor que hace que nunca debemos temer el no ser suficientes.
Love that is the most powerful force for healing in the universe.
El amor es la fuerza más poderosa para la sanación en el universo.
Love that knows no language and love that knows every language.
El amor que no conoce idiomas y el amor que conoce todos los idiomas.
Love that longs for us to accept it.
El amor que anhela que lo aceptemos.
To embrace it / Para abrazarlo.
And to share it with all God’s children.
Y compartirlo con todos los hijos de Dios
How is it that each of us hear these words in our own native tongue?
¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros escucha estas palabras en nuestra propia lengua materna?
How is it that each of us hear these words in our own heart language?
¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros escucha estas palabras en nuestro propio lenguaje del corazón?
Because that is the nature of the God who is love.
Porque esa es la naturaleza del Dios que es amor.
Love knows no language and love knows every language.
El amor que no conoce idiomas y el amor que conoce todos los idiomas.
“The heart knows a hundred thousand ways to speak.”
“El corazón sabe cien mil maneras de hablar”.
And today we hear them all / Y hoy las escuchamos todas.
We hear them in different languages.
Las escuchamos en diferentes idiomas.
We hear them from different generations.
Las escuchamos de diferentes generaciones.
Some are familiar to us and some are strange to us.
Algunas cosas nos resultan familiares y otros nos resultan raras.
Some make us feel safe and some tempt us to fear.
Algunos cosas nos hacen sentir seguros y otros nos tientan a temer.
And yet we need not fear, because in all their beautiful diversity, these voices all spring from that first voice.
Y, sin embargo, no debemos temer, porque en toda su diversa hermosura, todas estas voces brotan de esa primera voz.
That first sound / Ese primer sonido.
That first song / Esa primera canción.
And they are all saying / Y todas dicen.

Love / Amor
And there is enough / Y sí hay suficiente.
And you are enough / Y tu eres suficiente.
And we are enough / Y todos somos suficientes.
The heart knows a hundred thousand ways to speak.
El corazón sabe cien mil maneras de hablar.
And today we hear them all.
Y hoy las escuchamos todas.
In many languages / En muchos idiomas
From many generations / De muchas generaciones
From infinite expressions of the divine in humanity
En infinitas expresiones de lo divino en la humanidad
And we do not need to fear
Y no temenos que tener miedo
Because in every language / Porque en todos los idiomas
They are all the same God saying
En todos el mismo Dios esta diciendo
