Transgender Theologian Austen Hartke Preaches & Teaches

This Sunday, November 17, transgender theologian and author Austen Hartke will both preach at the 9 & 11:15 a.m. services, and speak in the Rector’s Forum at 10:15 a.m.

In the Forum, Austen will present Fiercely Incarnate: Gender Rebels in Scripture and Christian History. From Adam to Joan of Arc; from Deborah to Origen of Alexandria — Christian history and scripture is full of gender-nonconforming people living out their faith. While the language we use to describe gender diversity has changed over time, many of the experiences of those who have intentionally stepped over the gender line resonate with us today. But, as we know, rebels aren’t usually thought of fondly in their own time, so we’ll also look into what the rabbis of Jesus’ day said about bodies outside the binary, what Thomas Aquinas said about proper clothing, and what Plato might have borrowed from Genesis. Austen is a graduate of Luther Seminary’s Master of Arts program in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible Studies, author of Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians and creator of the YouTube series Transgender and Christian. Come see what our spiritual ancestors can teach us about resistance, acceptance, authenticity, and hope! Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear from this influential voice in the LGBTQ+ community in the pulpit at 9 & 11:15, and in the Forum at 10:15 a.m. All Saints Church is at 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena, directly across Euclid from Pasadena City Hall.
