Our Lady of Guadalupe / Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
“Hoy, nuestra Señora de Guadalupe nos pregunta: ¿Qué más podría hacer por ti?”
“Today, our lady of Guadalupe is asking us: What else could I possibly do for you?.” +
Hay una historia sobre una persona que estuvo atrapada en una casa durante una inundación. Esa persona empezó a orarle a Guadalupe para que los rescatara.
There is a story about a person who was trapped in a house during a flood. They began praying to Guadalupe to rescue them
Esa persona tenía una visión en su menta de que la mano de Guadalupe bajaba desde el cielo y los llevaría a un lugar seguro.
They had a vision in their head of Guadalupe’s hand reaching down from heaven and lifting them to safety.
El agua comenzó a subir de nivel, y un vecino le ofreció un aventón hacia un lugar seguro. La personale gritó: “estoy esperando que Guadalupe me salve“, y el vecino se fué en su camioneta.
The water started to rise in their house, and their neighbor offered them a ride to safety. The person yelled back, “I am waiting for Guadalupe to save me,” and the neighbor drove off in her pick-up truck.
A medida que el agua seguía subiendo de nivel, esta persona tuvo que subirse hasta el techo. Un bote vino con algunas personas que se dirigían hacia un lugar seguro.
As the water began rising in the house, the person had to climb up to the roof. A boat came by with some people heading for safe ground.
Le gritaron a la persona para agarrar una soga que estaban dispuestos a lanzarle para salvarle.
They yelled at the person to grab a rope they were ready to throw and take them to safety.
La persona les dijo “gracias, estoy esperando que Guadalupe me salve“. La gente del bote movió su cabeza y siguieron su camino.
The person told them “Thank you, I am waiting for Guadalupe to save me.” The people shook their heads and moved on.
Las aguas de la inundación continuaron aumentando.
The flood waters continued to rise.
Un helicóptero pasó, y una voz desde el altavoz se acercó para bajar una escalera y sacar a la persona del techo.
A helicopter flew by, and a voice came over a loudspeaker offering to lower a ladder and take them off the roof.
La persona le hizo una señal al helicóptero en la distancia y gritando: “estoy esperando a Guadalupe.”
The person waved the helicopter away, shouting back: “I am waiting for Guadalupe.”
Y el helicóptero se fue.
The helicopter left.
El agua de inundación llegó al techo y atrapó a esta persona, arrastrándola.
The flooding water came over the roof and caught them up and swept them away.
¡ La persona se ahogó !
They drowned !
Cuando llegaron al cielo, preguntaron: “Guadalupe, ¿por qué no nos salvaste? Creímos en ti con todo nuestro corazón!
When they reached heaven they asked: “Guadalupe, why did you not save us? We believed in you with all our heart!
Guadalupe le respondió: “te envié un camión, un bote y un helicóptero y no te montaste en ninguno. ¿Qué más podría hacer por ti?
Guadalupe replied, “I sent you a pick-up truck, a boat and a helicopter and you refused all of them. What else could I possibly do for you?”
A lo largo de la historia, Guadalupe ha sido una participante activa en la lucha contra la opresión, la injusticia y la inequidad social.
Throughout history, Guadalupe has been an active participant in the fight against oppression, unfairness, and social injustice.
Estuvo presente en la guerra de independencia de México y en la revolución mexicana.
She was present in The Mexican War of Independence, and the Mexican Revolution.
También sirvió como símbolo para los trabajadores del campo en su lucha por el reconocimiento de sus derechos.
She also served as a symbol for farmworkers in their fight for the recognition of their rights.
Refiriéndose a Guadalupe, Dolores Huerta dijo que “Guadalupe es un símbolo de fe, esperanza y liderazgo”.
Referring to Guadalupe, Dolores Huerta said that “Guadalupe is a symbol of faith, hope, and leadership.”
Más recientemente, también hemos visto la imagen de Guadalupe en las marchas aquí en los Ángeles abogando contra la deportación de niños inocentes.
More recently, we have also seen the image of Guadalupe in the marches here in Los Angeles advocating against the deportation of innocent children.
Entonces, ¿qué ha sucedido con nuestras oraciones que hemos hecho por casi 500 años a este símbolo de liberación para los marginados?…
So, what has happened with our prayers for almost 500 years to this symbol of liberation for the marginalized? …
…porque seguimos viviendo en un mundo que es eurocéntrico, con una brecha económica creciente, y que está dominado por los hombres blancos en posición de poder.
.. because we continue to live in a world that is Eurocentric, with a widening economic gap, and that is dominated by white males in position of power.
Sólo aquí en Estados Unidoso, al principio de este siglo, el 1% de la población disfrutaba de la mayor parte de los ingresos antes de impuestos,
Here in the USA alone, at the beginning of this century, the top 1% enjoyed the largest share of before-tax income,
y después de la recesión de 2008, este mismo grupo del 1% disfrutó del 93% de las ganancias de los ingresos después de la llamada recuperación.
and after the 2008 recession, this same top 1% group enjoyed 93% of the income gains after the so-called recovery.
El año pasado, los datos mostraron que casi 13 millones de uno de los grupos más vulnerables (niños y jóvenes), experimentó los más altos niveles de pobreza.
Last year, data showed that almost 13 million one of the most vulnerable groups(children and youth), experienced the highest levels of poverty.
Ese mismo año, los datos mostraron que los negros y los hispanos experimentaron tasas de pobreza dos o tres veces más altas que las personas blancas, no hispanas.
That same year, the data showed that Black and Hispanics experienced poverty rates two to three times higher than white, non-Hispanic people.
A pesar de esta triste realidad, también necesitamos reconocer el hecho de que algunas cosas han cambiado para bien.
Despite this sad reality, we also need to recognize the fact that some things have changed for good.
Hay un número cada vez mayor de personas de la cultura dominante que no sólo se están haciendo conscientes de su privilegio, sino que también se están convirtiendo en aliados con los que están en los márgenes.
There is an increasing number of people from the dominant culture that not only are becoming aware of their privilege, they are also becoming allies with those on the margins.
Ellos están uniendo esfuerzos en la lucha por la visión de Dios para el mundo, mundo donde todos, “los ricos y los pobres entran en un conocimiento Salvador de la gracia de Dios.”
They are joining forces in the fight for the world that God’s envisioned, a world where all, “the rich and the poor enter into a saving knowledge of God’s grace.”
Esa es la liberación que quiere Guadalupe, la liberación para todos, no sólo para el marginado Juan Diego, sino también para el privilegiado arzobispo Zumárraga,
That is the liberation that Guadalupe wants, the liberation for all, not just for the marginalized Juan Diego, but also for the privileged Archbishop Zumárraga,
Guadalupe quiere la liberación que desmiente, desenmascara y desenreda las ideologías, teologías y sistemas que operan en nuestra sociedad.
Guadalupe wants the liberation that debunks, unmasks, and disentangle the ideologies, theologies, and systems that operate in our society.
Al perseguir esa liberación, estamos llamados a ser responsables de tomar decisiones que exijan alternativas estructurales y sistémicas que aseguran el bienestar de todos nosotros.
In pursuing that liberation, we are called to become responsible decision-makers who demand structural and systemic alternatives that embrace the well-being of all of us.
En la historia de la aparición de Guadalupe, al menos dos personas son transformadas, el marginado Juan Diego, y el arzobispo privilegiado. ¿Con quien te relacionas más en la historia?
In the story of the apparition of Guadalupe, at least two people are transformed, the marginalized Juan Diego, and the privileged Archbishop. Who do you relate the most to in the story?
Si nos relacionamos con el arzobispo privilegiado, Guadalupe nos está recordando hoy que nosotros también necesitamos la liberación, porque somos prisioneros de nuestro propio privilegio.
If we relate to the privileged Archbishop, Guadalupe is reminding us today that we too are in need of liberation, because we are prisoners of our own privilege.
Guadalupe está invitando al privilegiado a seguir el ejemplo de nuestro líder Jesús, quien se encarnó en la vida y la situación de los pobres.
Guadalupe is inviting the privileged to follow the example of our leader Jesus, who incarnated himself into the lives and plight of the poor.
El teólogo de la liberación Miguel de la torre dice que cuando el privilegiado entra en la realidad de los marginados, lo conoce mejor, y puede transformar esa realidad
Liberation theologian Miguel de la Torre says that when the privilege enters the reality of the marginalized, they know it better, and they can transform it.
Guadalupe también invita a los privilegiados a caminar en solidaridad con los marginados, porque no podemos llamarnos cristianos y seguir siendo cómplices de las estructuras sociales que privilegian a los blancos, los ricos y a los hombres.
Guadalupe is also inviting the privileged to walk in solidarity with the marginalized, because we cannot call ourselves Christians and remain complicit with the social structures that privilege whiteness, wealth, and maleness.
Si nos relacionamos con el marginado Juan Diego, Guadalupe nos invita a ser proactivos, a exigir mejores salarios, condiciones de trabajo, mejores escuelas para nuestros hijos y vecindarios más seguros, no para que nos tengan lástima, sino por nuestros derechos humanos.
If we relate to the marginalized Juan Diego, Guadalupe is inviting us to be proactive, to demand better wages, working conditions, better schools for our children, and safer neighborhoods, not out of a sense of pity, but based on our human rights.
Guadalupe está invitando a los marginados a buscar la solidaridad con otros que también están marginados, y unir sus fuerzas para exigir cambios estructurales dentro de la sociedad.
Guadalupe is inviting the marginalized to seek solidarity with others who are also marginalized, and join forces to demand structural changes within society.
Guadalupe está animando a los marginados a confrontar a los privilegiados. Porque, ¿qué pasa si cuando son confrontados, los privilegiados tienen un cambio de corazón?
Guadalupe is encouraging the marginalized to confront the privileged. Because, what if when confronted, the privileged have a change of heart?
Todos nosotros, los marginados y los privilegiados, estamos llamados a trabajar juntos para perfeccionar nuestra realidad, y evitar que el status quo se vuelva absolute..
All of us, the marginalized and the privileged, are called to work together to perfect our reality, and prevent the status quo from absolutizing itself.
Estamos llamados a trabajar juntos para rechazar el actual orden social fundamentado en estructuras diseñadas para perpetuar el heterosexismo, el racismo, el sexismo y el clasismo.
We are called to work together to reject the current social order grounded in structures designed to perpetuate heterosexism, racism, sexism, and classism.
Estamos llamados a protestar la forma como son las cosas actualmente, e imaginar, basándonos en la realidad de los marginados, cómo la sociedad puede ser reestructurada para crear un orden social más justo.
We are called to protest the way things presently are, and imagine, based on the reality of the marginalized, how society can be restructured to create a more just social order.
Todos tenemos un papel y la responsabilidad cristiana de buscar la liberación de ambos, marginados y privilegiados, porque al hacerlo, verificamos la humanidad del uno al otro, como seres humanos creados a imagen de Dios.
We all have a role and the Christian responsibility to seek out the liberation of both the marginalized and the privileged, because in doing so, we verify the humanity of one another, as human beings created in the image of God.
Hoy, casi 500 años desde la aparición de Guadalupe, la ayuda de Dios hacia la liberación para todos ha llegado una vez más,
Today, almost 500 years since the apparition of Guadalupe, God’s help toward liberation for all has arrived once again,
¿vamos a saltar sobre el camión, el bote o el helicóptero, o vamos a seguir esperando y ahogarnos?
are we going to jump on the truck, the boat, or the helicopter, or are we going to continue waiting and drown?
