As the nation gears up for World Series 2018 two Episcopal Churches — one in Los Angeles and one in Boston — are coming together to leverage their passion for their home team to support those seeking refuge and home in the U.S. by raising funds to provide legal services for immigrants and refugees.
All Saints’ Rector Mike Kinman said, “Just as L.A. is coming together around our Dodgers, this is a chance for us all to come together to provide life-saving legal services to those among us who right now are being taken from their homes and threatened with deportation. Everyone has a right to be safe at home – and we’re going to work together to make that happen.”
And the Very Rev. Amy McCreath, dean of The Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s said, “We ARE praying for our team … but we are also praying for all those immigrants in detention, and those without legal counsel who have to navigate a complex system erected to make it hard for them to find hope and a new life Let’s use this World Series to battle for righteousness. May the best team win, and may All Saints Pasadena and St. Paul’s Cathedral “provoke one another to love and good deeds.” (Heb. 10:24)
On Sunday, October 28 each congregation will be taking up a special collection for immigrant legal services in their home diocese. In Los Angeles that will be IRIS Interfaith Immigration Services and in Boston it is Episcopal City Mission’s legal fund for immigrants.
- The winning team’s diocese will received the funds collected by both congregations.
- The losing team’s Dean/Rector will wear the winning team’s cap at church the Sunday after the Series ends.

Organizers hope this challenge will not only raise awareness of and support for legal counsel for immigrants and refugees but offer an antidote to the polarization and division in our nation as fans of opposing teams work together toward a common goal.
At All Saints in Pasadena Sunday, October 28 is being designated “Dodger Sunday” and parish members will be encouraged to wear their Dodger gear and gather for an all-parish photo shoot at 12:45 p.m. outside the church.
