Russell Ferrante

On Sunday, November 24, join us for our First Jazz Vespers of the Season: Russell Ferrante
5:00 p.m. on the Chancel.

All Saints Parishioner and founding member of the YellowJackets, Russell Ferrante’s first exposure to music came from his church, where his father was the choir director as well as being a frequent vocal soloist and having a vocal gospel quartet. He began piano lessons at 9 with the expectation that one day he would be the church pianist…but his musical interests took him elsewhere. Russ has performed with Jimmy Witherspoon, Jim Pepper, Joe Farrell, Joni Mitchell, Bobby McFerrin, Robben Ford, Al Jarreau, Marilyn Scott, Kevyn Lettau, Ernie Watts, Sadao Watanabe, GRP, Big Band, Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott, Take 6, Michael Franks, Eric Marienthal, and Brenda Russell. Russell currently teaches in the Jazz Studies department at USC.

Russ will be joined by Michael Valerio on bass and Ray Brinker on drums.

Validated parking is available at Plaza las Fuentes.

The All Saints Jazz Vespers program brings together amazing musicianship and holy inspiration eight times a year for a service of prayer, meditation and music. Over the years our sanctuary has been blessed by artists such as Billy Childs, Alan Broadbent and Shelly Berg, Alan Pasqua, Bill Cunliffe and Holly Hofmann, Russell Ferrante, Walter Smith III, John and Gerald Clayton.

So many of them tell us that they love playing in the context of a vespers service with prayers and short meditations and the sense that this is a holy enterprise, not just a jazz concert in the church. For more on jazz as holy work, read Christina Honchell’s reflection God Leaps In.

Jazz Vespers is live streamed from the church on Sunday evenings at 5:00 p.m. When we return to in-person worship, we gather in the intimacy of the Chancel for an extraordinary experience of jazz in-the-round. If you need assistance to get up into the Chancel, please arrive at least five minutes early; a wheel chair lift is available. No charge (free will offering taken) and no reservations required. Join us for an extraordinary celebration of joy, energy and liberation.
