Las Posadas (Spanish for “the inns”) is an Advent celebration revolving around the concept of hospitality. In Latin America, it is traditional to hold Posadas during the nine days before Christmas, beginning December 16 and ending December 24. This year, All Saints will host Los Posadas Sin Frontreras/Posadas Without Borders on Thursday, December 20 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The Posadas symbolize Mary and Joseph’s long, frustrating search for a place to stay where Jesus could be born. We learn from the Posadas that by welcoming the poor and the needy, we are welcoming Jesus in our midst: “‘truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:40).
Members of the All Saints community, children and adults are the pilgrims (“Peregrinos”), who go to places, singing a traditional song about Mary and Joseph searching for lodging. At one place after the other, they are turned away, until the weary travelers reach the designated site for the party, where Mary and Joseph are finally recognized and allowed to enter.
Join us in a pilgrimage to remember the challenges that Jesus, Joseph and Mary faced to get into an inn, and — in this time of crisis at our border — to reflect on the challenges that all immigrants … adults, youth and children … are currently facing.
There will be hot chocolate, a piñata and gifts for the children donated by the Pasadena Police Department. All are welcome — especially families with children — to join us for this festive celebration.
Thursday, December 20th, at 7:00 PM, starting in Sweetland Hall and around the Church campus.
