Celebrating Pride Month at All Saints Church is nothing new — we’ve been standing in solidarity and celebration with the LGBTQ community for decades. And yet, this year is different.
This year we recognize that celebrating the progress made is not enough as we are living through a moment when forces are at work to reverse the hard-won steps forward on that arc history we have been told bends toward justice. We are watching God’s LGBTQ beloved in general made scapegoats in our public discourse and transgender youth in particular made sacrificial lambs on the altar of partisan politics. We are seeing the Good News of God’s inclusive love proclaimed by the Jesus we follow perverted into the toxic theology espoused by Christian Nationalism which is being used as a weapon of mass discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
So this year is year of both celebration and solidarity. Celebration of the incremental steps forward we have taken over the last decades to bring us to where we are as a church, a community and a nation and solidarity with all those offering sacred resistance to the forces seeking to turn back the clock. Whoever you are and wherever you find yourself on the spectrum of orientation or identity, join us in the days and weeks ahead as we work to make God’s love tangible in our work and witness; in our celebration and in our struggle; in our parades and our protests.
From welcoming back Bishop Gene Robinson to Drag Queen karaoke; from an Interfaith Prayer Service to and all-parish Dance Party; from marching with our Sacred Resistance siblings in the L.A. Pride Parade to rainbow popsicles on the lawn there is truly something for everyone. Together we can be change we want to see. Together we can become the Beloved Community we were created to be. La lucha continua — the struggle continues. Happy Pride, All Saints!
