Lenten Offerings and Small Groups 2023

Throughout Lent, All Saints offers a diverse and stimulating array of events and small groups — educational, meditative and active. Please mark these events in your calendars and join us.

Lenten Book Study: The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness by Greg Boyle
Mondays, March 27, 4:00–5:00 p.m., on Zoom.
Led by Sally Howard. Nothing we hold in our lives is more consequential than the notion of God we hold. Our stories can free us, heal us, and empower us to love ourselves and each other—and they can also imprison, hinder, or even harm us and those around us. In this Lenten ofering, we will read the latest book by Greg Boyle, Founder of Homeboy industries, and explore together our own stories about God. The group will also offer guided contemplative space to ground ourselves in the extravagant love that exists for all of us. For more information contact Amanda McCormick at amccormick@allsaints-pas.org.

Lenten Book Study: Jesus, Friend of My Soul by Joyce Rupp
Continuing Tuesdays, March 28 – April 11, 7:00 p.m. in the Jr. High Room.

Facilitated by Susan Adkins. Soon it will be Lent!…and our Lenten journey offers us a ‘time-out’ opportunity to explore the insights and blessings God has for us – together and as individuals. This year you are cordially invited to join a small Lenten discussion group and share together thoughts and questions as we read Jesus, Friend of My Soul, by Joyce Rupp. You have two options: In-person in the Seminar Room, Tuesday Feb. 21 – April 11, 7:00 p.m. or on Zoom, Thurs. Feb. 23 – April 13, 7:00 p.m. For more information contact Amanda McCormick at amccormick@allsaints-pas.org.

Lenten Book Study: Dancing in the Darkness: Spiritual Lessons for Thriving in Turbulent Time
Continuing Wednesday, March 29, 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Join us for a five-week online Lenten Book Group led by Mike Kinman. This year, All Saints Church is building a relationship with one of the great progressive churches in America, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Their pastor, the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, is one of the pre-eminent preachers in the church today, and his new book, Dancing in the Darkness: Spiritual Lessons for Thriving in Turbulent Times, is a brilliant and heartfelt guide to uplift our spirits as we work for justice in these politically turbulent times. Drawing on the teachings of Dr. King, Howard Thurman, scripture, global spiritual traditions, Black culture and his own personal experiences, Dr. Moss instructs you on how to practice spiritual resistance by combining justice and love. This Lent, we will be reading this book together and talking about how its wisdom can inform our lives individually and as a community. Register online here.

Lenten Book Study: The Gifts of Imperfection by Dr Brene Brown
Continuing Wednesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom.
Led by Thomas Diaz and Staci Kennelly. The Gifts of Imperfection by Dr. Brené Brown invites us to join a wholehearted revolution. Join Staci Kennelly (she/her) and Thomas Diaz (he/him) as we explore our messy, heartbreaking, grace-filled and joyful lives. We’ll gather around the theme of “My story matters because I matter.” You don’t need to own the book to join the group. To register, contact Thomas at tdiaz@allsaints-pas.org.

Lenten Book Study: Boethius and the Consolation of Philosophy: Why do bad things happen to good people?
Continuing Thursday, March 30, 6:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Facilitated by David Hunt. Why do bad things happen to good people? This was a very personal question for Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius as he sat in prison, falsely accused of treason, during the year 524 AD. His meditations on “the problem of evil,” written while he awaited execution, combine profound insights from both Christian theology and pagan wisdom. Boethius’s conclusions regarding the true nature of good and evil, and their relation to divine providence, have consoled millions of readers over the centuries, from Dante and C.S. Lewis to…my TV repairman (whose story I’ll share with you at our first meeting). Information = Amanda McCormick, amccormick@allsaints-pas.org.

Jump In & Dig Deeper: Episcopal Church 101 Classes Continue March 30th
The five-session hybrid (in person and online) course concludes on Thursday evening, March 30 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Episcopal Church 101 is a series of presentations, discussions and small group meetings designed for anyone wanting to go deeper into the history, theology and core values of the Episcopal Church. The program concludes with the opportunity to receive the sacramental rite of Confirmation when Bishop Gene Robinson visits All Saints on Sunday, April 16. Here’s what one parish leader wrote about his experience with both the class and Confirmation: “From the moment I stepped onto the lawn one Sunday morning, everything fell into place. Within weeks I was entrenched in the All Saints Community, joining small groups and becoming an usher. When the Confirmation Class began a few months later, it just seemed like a ‘no brainer’ because it isn’t just about confirming my commitment to my community; it’s about committing to my faith, my roots and my growth as a spiritual being.” Save the dates. Register here. For more information contact Thomas Diaz at tdiaz@allsaints-pas.org.

Exploring All Saints: Campus Tours by PACES
Sunday, April 2 after the 10AM service
Did you know what treasures are stored in the South Tower of the Sanctuary? Or that our tiled floors are from the famous Batchelder Studios? We will visit these and other rarely-seen locations on a “behind the scenes” tour of our campus focusing on the need for preservation and repairs.
Our beautiful Sanctuary is 100 years old this year, and several parts of our All Saints Church campus are in need of repair and replacement. Before the Pandemic, the PACES team (Planning and Campus Enhancement Strategies) had prepared a set of detailed options for the Vestry. The Vestry will be taking up this issue in the coming months, and they will want to hear from parishioners at large (that’s YOU!) about campus refresh priorities and needs. The tour lasts about 90 minutes, so please wear comfortable shoes.
We will meet at the Oak tree immediately after the 10AM Service. Please register, but walk-ins are welcome as space permits. More information = Debbie Daniels at ddaniels@allsaints-pas.org.
