It’s an old joke with several different punch lines — but here at All Saints Church it’s also a new story about the amazing work of our volunteers and staff implementing the Vestry’s June 2016 Climate Change Resolution by changing 1300 light bulbs on the ASC campus!
From the report filed by Climate Change Task Force Chair Bob Whitson with data from TF member Phil Naecker:
Here are the numbers from the Phase One (program/office space) of our LED Retrofit Project. (Phase Two will tackle the Church — which we will be doing very soon.)
Total Old Fixtures: 784
Total New Fixtures: 772
Total Installation Cost: $62,569.60
Annual Energy Savings: $19,295.67
Payback Years: 10 Months
Rebate Estimate: $46,927.20
You are reading it correctly – we will get nearly $47,000 in rebates, and the balance of the non-rebated cost will be recovered in just 10 months (i.e., from the $19,000/year in energy savings). After that, we save $19,000 per year, every year.
Fun fact: We will be saving the electricity equivalent to about 10 typical American households.
Therms Saved: -613.1742
Coincidental Peak kW Reduction: 24.48
Deep bows of gratitude to the generosity of anonymous donors who covered the cost of the fixtures and to the staff and volunteers who helped move us forward on our commitment to “make the operations and activities of All Saints Church carbon-neutral by a date certain.”
And one more grace note to this story: The outdated bulbs and fixtures left over after the retrofit? Donated to Planned Parenthood of San Gabriel Valley — so nothing was wasted.
Puts us in mind of that great quote from (Episcopalian) Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Changing the world — one light bulb at a time!
Stay tuned for further updates from the Climate Change Task Force.
